This is a cool, lightweight cap for wearing at home or to bed. It can be knit in different colours and the look can be changed in a variety of ways.
With post-laundered tension stitch and row count, using cotton yarn, cast on sts for 21 inches in waste yarn. Knit 1 inch, fold line, knit 1 inch and hang open stitches back to main bed. Knit 4 inches in stockinette. Begin decreasing for crown. Knit 4 inches with a declining number of decreases between rows to make pinwheel design at crown. Example: If 4 inches equals 40 rows, decrease every 10th st across the bed, K4R, decrease every 9th st across the bed and continue this decreasing to the end. Leave a long yarn tail to gather remaining stitches and graph seam. Insert a soft, one inch elastic in the hem.
Alternatives
Knit the first inch in rib, instead of a hem and elastic.
Knit a 'mobius' type band in the same or different colours to be worn over the cap.
Knit a plain band and embellish with I-cord decoration, I-cord flowers or knit/gathered flowers.
Using a long rectangular scarf, twist end to end, tie around the cap and knot at the back or side. The scarf ends can be left to hang down, or twisted into a 'bun' style.
This is my own pattern, and please feel free to pass it along to anyone who might like to use it.
